My family and I have stayed in Comfort Suites hotels before. In Davis, CA, it’s our go-to hotel for consistent low-prices, service, accommodations, and amenities. In fact, we carry a Choice Hotels frequent guest card.
So when we took a last-minute trip this weekend, we chose Comfort Suites in Fresno, CA and had a less than enjoyable stay.
First the positive, the rooms are inexpensive and sleep all 5 of us comfortably. With our Automobile Association of America card, we stayed for a room rate of under $100 before taxes. The room contained two queen beds plus a sofa-sleeper that was comfortable. The Sunbeam shower heads are also a plus, I love a great relaxing shower with choice of stream or massaging water pressure.
At the Herndon site in Fresno, there’s an indoor pool. Being the first of May we experienced great weather, and it was definitely a selling point. The kids had a good time, yet the pool was only 4.5 ft. deep so there was no jumping in or diving. Also, there is free wi-fi throughout the hotel which was great for me to keep up with my social media as well as help find local theaters, restaurants, and shopping while we were there.
Upon waking, we were ready for our complimentary breakfast, that combines continental style with some freshly cooked hot food like eggs and sausage. While waiting for my toast, I caught a sight from the corner of my eye. Large black ants! They were about a half-dozen and they were on the walls around the bread and baked goods. I immediately alerted the worker on duty and she tended to the issue. I decided against eating at that point walked over for some juice. At that point I noticed more ants on the counter and everywhere where the food was sitting. Needless to say, I was disgusted.
We headed back up to our room to find our keys suddenly stopped working. It was 2 hours from checkout, we had to go get them re-coded. First thing in the morning I called and requested a free late checkout and was granted. When my husband went to recode the cards they said it was nearing time to check-out. My husband mentioned we called for an extension and they had no record of it. They said they’d “allow it” this time, but normally they’d charge?! Seemed there was a lack of communication.
What started out as a nice stay ended on a sour note. Will we choose Comfort Suites again? If we do, it won’t be for a long time!
This was our honest, tried-and-true experience. We were not compensated in any way to write this post.
