It’s a Whole New World now that casting for the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Aladdin is done and filming is currently underway in a London studio! This is such exciting news, Aladdin is in my top three favorite Disney films of all time! Cheesy as it may sound, that song was a huge part of the beginning of my relationship with my husband 25 years ago. We saw the animated classic in the theaters together as a young couple and I purchased the soundtrack as soon as it was released! You also can never forget the amazing comedic touch that Robin Williams handed to the voice of the Genie!
Check out how two-time Oscar® nominee Will Smith shared the news with fans on social media, selfie-style:
The cast will include Smith filling HUGE shoes as the Genie; Mena Massoud (Amazon’s “Jack Ryan”) as Aladdin; Naomi Scott (“Power Rangers”) as Princess Jasmine; Marwan Kenzari (“Murder on the Orient Express”) as Jafar; and Navid Negahban (“Homeland”) as the Sultan.
Behind the scenes of Aladdin, you’ll find Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Holmes,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”) as director, and producers Dan Lin (“The LEGO Movie”) with Golden Globe® winner Marc Platt (“La La Land”). Eight-time Academy Award®-winning composer Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid”) provides the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Oscar®-winning lyricists Howard Ashman (“Little Shop of Horrors”) and Tim Rice (“The Lion King”) as well as two new songs written by Menken and Oscar® and Tony Award®-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“La La Land,” “Dear Evan Hansen”).
I’m glued to my seat for updates and when it will be released, I’ll be sharing as soon as I know. Will Smith is a fabulous actor but Robin Williams as Genie is pure Disney magic. I already feel myself comparing the two and I just hope that Smith can do even half the job!
Stay tuned for more and follow along on social media.
