Californian’s who like there yard green now have a new tool to make the most of their irrigation water. Scotts® has released a new product EveryDrop™ that helps get more water to the roots, where it is needed most. As someone who takes pride in keeping their yard nice year-round, I was eager to use EveryDrop™ on our dry, browning lawn as soon as possible!
The drought in California is real and the effects are evident all over our neighborhood. Mandatory water usage reductions and the threat of impending fines and rate hikes have our family of five doing everything possible to make sure we are conserving water. We’ve shortened our shower times, made sure the dishwasher and washing machine are always running full loads, and did a detailed inspection of our water system. That inspection lead usto the replacement of a couple questionable components and new valve seats for all our faucets.
Outdoors, our watering days are now limited to two days a week and we’ve tuned our sprinklers to eliminate overspray and converted a number of locations to drip systems. Our efforts of cutting the grass taller to promote deeper roots, mulching to conserve moisture, and watering only at night have got us through August with a greenish brown lawn. While many homeowners have just stopped watering, there are those of us who have spent years nurturing our landscaping and don’t have the heart to let our beloved plants die off. As another Indian summer progresses through October I’m starting to wonder if I can keep enough green alive to make it to the rainy season.
Fertilizing with Scotts® EveryDrop™ reduces the surface tension of the water and allows the ground to absorb it more efficiently. Instead of beading up and rolling off hard dry soil, water in areas treated with EveryDrop™ spreads out and soaks into the root zones. ScottsMiracle-Gro® launched this unique blend of wetting agents to the public this September to ensure that Californians can responsibly try to maintain their landscape with a minimal amount of water. These landscapes are a vital component of many neighborhoods and provide areas for families to gather and play, serve as a natural air purifier, and also act as a soothing cool transition from a hot urban street to your humble place of living.
EveryDrop™ is a granular mix that comes in a bag similar to fertilizer and can be applied with a drop or broadcast spreader monthly for best results. The wetting agents are activated when they come into contact with rain or irrigation water. This technology that has been used by professional turf grass managers for years to help hard dry soils is now available for consumers to efficiently irrigate their landscape while using 25% less water.
Living in California allows us to enjoy the outdoors all year and that includes spending time in our front and back yards. Hopefully soon we’ll be able to enjoy the lawn again in appearance and for play, down to the simple barefoot jaunt to the mailbox that currently causes a bit of pain. More information is available at www.scottsmiraclegro.com/california and be sure to look for Scotts® EveryDrop™ at retailers including Home Depot, Lowe’s and Orchard Supply in stores now.
