For a light red wine alternative, Ricossa Barbera is also a classic choice from the Piedmont region in Italy. Light-bodied, low in tannin and characterized by fresh berry flavors, Ricossa Barbera is the perfect match for “al fresco” dining. Start the meal with Ricossa Moscato, and complete it with Ricossa Barbera paired with Piedmont favorites such as grilled meats and light summer pastas.
My Take: Last night my husband and I opened a bottle of Ricossa Barbera D’Asti to enjoy by itself. It was a very hot night so pairing it with food was not an option for me. After opening the bottle I let the wine breathe for awhile. (I have seen wine “people” do this on many occasions). I poured a couple of glasses and swirled and smelled mine deeply. While lovely in color, I found the scent of cherries hard to find. I sampled the glass and found that it was not my favorite. The acidity of the wine was very overpowering and I did not taste the the cherries and berries in the blend. This red wine was not a favorite of mine, perhaps somebody with a more refined palate could pull out the flavors of the fruity blend.
The suggested retail price of Ricossa Barbera is $14.99 a bottle.
