When my husband and I realized that it had been more than 15 years since we’d been to the Yosemite area, it occurred to us that our kids had NEVER been there. Being just a short 3.5 hour drive to one of the world’s most famous National Parks, we were slightly ashamed of ourselves! Just last month we took a trip to the iconic park and stayed at Evergreen Lodge (just one mile from the Big Oak Flat entrance). Evergreen Lodge is the perfect getaway that is fun for everyone at every age and encourages you to “unplug” and bond as a family!
We’ve been meaning to get to the snow for a few months, and we were pleased that the previous weekend’s storm dropped some snow around the 22 acres of property. Just below the two-bedroom cabin, our kids could toss some snowballs, build snowmen, and just enjoy this California winter.
Cabins at Evergreen provide modern amenities but keep you close to nature with stump decor (stand, lamp), wood accents, and camping style themes.Honestly, one thing my teenager mentioned was, “yes! I get a bed to myself,” which helped start the weekend off on the right start. In fact, my 7-year old also had a twin bed to herself and my son was able to take over the sofabed pull-out. Traveling with a big family should be comfortable!
There is no television or wi-fi available in the cabins, so we brought out the box of games provided, my husband read, and we re-taught ourselves how to play without electronics. The room included a Sirius radio with dozens of stations, so there was some dancing and singing happening too!
Just a walk down the path (lit at night), you can enjoy more family style activities in the Rec Hall or Tuolumne Hall. Whether you want to read by the fire or play a round of pool or foosball, get hands-on with the kids. The Outdoor Fireplace will host s’mores making near nightly and my youngest even had an opportunity to do tye-dye (for an extra fee)!
They are only able to provide internet access via satellite, it was almost non-existent, which meant I had a whole 3 minutes the entire weekend, hard for my assignment for social media but good for family time, you find it gets easier as time goes on.
There was so much outdoor fun, the spider web, ropes course, there was bocce ball, and the “tree house” plus there’s the hot tub that’s open in the winter! We soaked up the daylight hours as much as possible.
There are spots that people return for each season, each year that just can take your breath away and make this such a unique special location…We took a natural trail hike around Camp Mather just behind the Evergreen Lodge property and continued to be in awe at nature’s beauty.
But most of all, we shared eachother’s time.
There is a gift shop, general store for your must-haves, a bar/tavern, and a full restaurant serving 3 meals a day for your family’s convenience. I enjoyed parking once and not driving the rest of the weekend. It’s everything you need and want for a perfect getaway. My husband and I are still talking about Evergreen Lodge and look forward to our next trip when we can take advantage of their lovely pool area and even their canvas tent area that will provide a “traditional camping” experience with a kick!
If you’re heading to the area and want to stay in Yosemite, take a look at Evergreen Lodge, www.evergreenlodge.com, I know you’ll be intrigued, after you stay you will be hooked!
