“Alice returns to the whimsical world of Wonderland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter.”
IMDB sums up the latest adventures of Alice in Wonderland beautifully, but there is SO much more than that! My daughter and I were thrilled to be reviewing the newest installment of these movies, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and we were riveted from beginning to end.
The story…the cast…the imagery — everything was spectacular!
Johnny Depp is forever a favorite when he is playing an interesting character such as the Mad Hatter, and I think he delivered his best performance here. The digital work that goes into making him the Mad Hatter is pretty amazing, but he brings it to life with his acting and expression. It’s also a treat to see where he came from and what his family was like. We do know for sure that he’s the only one who’s “Mad.”
Mia Wasikowska always makes a lovely Alice, but in this movie I especially wanted to see her succeed in her quest. She finally really accepts that Wonderland is real for her, and welcomes it openly. Her first moments with the Caterpillar (now butterfly) of course made me teary. Hearing Alan Rickman’s voice one more time was a gift, reminding me once again how much I loved him.
The duo of Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter is a favorite of mine, having loved them together in Le Mis a few years back. Both bring incredible talent to the movie, making you laugh out loud thanks to excellent acting and hilarious writing. You will love him as Time and you won’t be disappointed to have her back as the Red Queen. Some background on why she is who she is helps a lot.
And then there are the sidekicks! Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry), White Rabbit (Michael Sheen), Tweedledum and Tweedledee (Matt Lucas) and Bayard the Bloodhound (Timothy Spall) They are beloved and a part of the Alice family that my daughter especially enjoyed. Who wouldn’t want to travel back through time and see Bayard as a puppy?
The entire movie is a delight to the senses with spectacular special effects and color. We were impressed throughout the film with how both the background and storyline all flowed together and gave you such a sense of wonder. I know I wouldn’t mind a trip there myself. Be sure to take the kids and grownup kids to see this film. It’s fun for all ages and not too difficult to follow. Thank you Disney for allowing me to enjoy this preview!
