Our Take: We had a BBQ over the weekend to celebrate the beautiful Spring weather we’ve finally gotten, plus to have a family movie night featuring the DVD series Frozen Planet. My kids are familiar with watching nature documentaries and even a few of the episodes we did see were ones they’ve previously viewed! My 6 year old’s first question about the films was, “is this a true story?” It was sweet and innocent and throughout the evening as we enjoyed Disc 1 she was purely captivated! The visuals of the tundra, the amazing colors of the sky, the idea that the sun only shines half the year, plus the amazing animals all left us speechless and quiet as we watched the first disc.My son and husband had seen a few scenes in the weeks since the shows debuted on the Discovery channel, but left the surprises for me and my 6 year old to watch for ourselves. The spectacular cinematography just overwhelmed us, especially as they flew over the active volcano on Mt. Erabus so carefully, such a risky flight. Other scenes that moved us was the polar bear fight, the bison/wolves chase, and all the penguins (especially those who were thieves stealing rocks). The caves and the ice formations were to unique, while we just held our breath as we watched the divers beneath the ice covered waters filming the most unique creatures we’ve seen. The Freeze Frame segments that went behind the scenes and showed us the utter friendliness of the killer whales surprising the cameramen and the cameramen that were dodging the scary 100+mph winds was really interesting! Watching the first disc last night, the most spectacular story that is still in our minds today was the Wooly Bear Caterpillar’s 14 year rebirth or “rising from the dead” season after season to finally embark on it’s life as a moth! Truly amazing. We cannot wait to get to the final 2 discs in the series.
We were sent DVDs, movie themed memorabilia, plus a gift card to cover the food for our viewing party, all opinions are our own.
