I went to college just 30 miles west of California’s state capital of Sacramento.  Back then I had no idea what a staycation was, so my husband (then boyfriend) and I never have stayed in the area overnight.  Now, my husband frequents the area working for the state on business, so we are always in search of accommodations  close to the offices he utilizes.  Just 3-4 miles from the business park, across the street from Caesar Chavez park the Citizen Hotel stands tall in the heart of downtown.   The city’s only boutique hotel is my first choice for our next trip to Sacramento.A sucker for palm trees, the hotel entrance reflects the beautiful tropical plants from across the street.  The ceiling and lights upon walking it make a grand statement as does the seating and waiting area surrounding the reservation desk.  Walls made to look like a government library with plush seating of royal blue and scarlet, you feel the political influence of the area surrounding the hotel.

Inside the elevators, you find quotes from former presidents and inside the guest rooms as well as along the hallways, political cartoons are interesting to read in especially this timely election season.

After viewing the lobby, you expect nothing but interesting guest room décor.  Who knew thin stripes of cream and goldenrod would be so striking against black and silver.  The lampshades have the California constitution printed on them, along with normal do not disturb sign reading a more apropos “closed door session” graces the doorknob.

Modern amenities like the iHome clock/radio/phone-device charger, mini bar, a somewhat “smart tv,” and my favorite, the Keurig coffee maker just add icing to the cake when you have a luxurious bed to sleep in.

Let me mention a bit more about that smart TV.  Scrolling through menu options, you find movies and shows on demand and pay per view for families and adults only. But, also you have a local guide selection where you can search shopping, dining, and more.  It’s like your personal in-room concierge. Click on the food type you want, a list of suggestions are mentioned plus starred-reviews.  Find a local of your choice and the address, phone number,  and map will get you there.  Perfect for those without their own smartphone…and for my husband had he been traveling alone.The bathroom is small once inside and with closed pocket door, but I do enjoy having a robe to lounge in and I especially love a wonderful rain shower style shower head to wake up to.

Business travelers (and their companions) appreciate workout rooms…and business centers for work, printing out your flight info, or signing up for the Joie de Vivre free frequent visitor club.  Computers are both Mac and PC friendly  and are offered for free for the first 20 minutes and a small fee thereafter.With meeting rooms and a locale that is used constantly in the late summer for weddings, the Citizen Hotel is a wonderful place to stay. Valet parking is offered for a reasonable $25/night, there are wonderful places to dine (Pizza Rock) nearby as well as Grange, the onsite restaurant.  Museums, shopping, and theaters are close for your evening pleasures and I look forward to our next stay for sure.
