A Caribbean cruise used to be the preserve of the rich and famous, but not anymore. Cruise companies now have so many more packages on offer that people from all walks of life can pack their bags and set sail, with a Caribbean cruise having become a viable option for a family vacation. The experience is unique, with the chance to both relax and partake in on-board activities and, importantly, enjoy the glorious weather.
But before you go on your cruise — or, indeed, on any cruise to a tropical destination — you need to pack the right wardrobe so you’ll be comfortable, fashionable and suitably attired for the cruise adventure.
Doing it by day
During the day, the temperature is going to be warm, so you want to pack clothes that will keep you cool — while also being stylish. Shorts, polo shirts and slacks are good options for the men, while casual skirts, blouses and sundresses would be ideal choices for women. Light-colored clothing is best because it reflects the heat of the sun better than dark colors, which tend to absorb it. Cotton and linen are good material choices as they help prevent stickiness. Choose footwear with a sturdy soul as decks can be slippery — wedge sandals and deck shoes work well.
Packing for poolside
The on-board pool is often one of the central hubs on a cruise ship. Pack two swimsuits per person so you always have a dry one. Shorts and t-shirts, as well as sarongs are a good idea for cover-up as you go to and from the pool. A pair of flip flops is appropriate for the wet decking around the pool – you don’t want anyone slipping over and injuring themselves in the middle of your cruise.
Those famed formal evenings
Your Caribbean cruise is likely to have a range of dining options, but most have at least one formal occasion during a trip. Check with your cruise line to find out what their requirements are. As a general rule, men will require at least a business casual suit with a button-up shirt and smart shoes (no sneakers), while women should take a smart dress and some feature jewelry to accessorize with. On some cruises, you may even have to wear a tuxedo or cocktail dress. You’ll want to create a good impression if you’re sitting down to dinner with strangers.
Dressing the kids
You’ll be too busy having fun to want to do laundry while you’re on the cruise. Pack several pairs of shorts and a few t-shirts for each child. These will be their general daytime clothes. Throw in some long pants and a sweater in case the evenings get a little chilly. As with the adults, two swimsuits and some suitable footwear are essential for the pool. In terms of formal wear, the dress codes for children tend to be more relaxed, but almost every cruise will expect some degree of “dressing for dinner.” Pack slacks and collared shirts for the boys and summer dresses with cardigans for the girls.
