I’m of Mexican descent. I can eat Mexican food every day for the rest of my life and be content. When I get the chance to visit a new (to me) restaurant with Mexican food, I jump. Rubio’s Restaurants is known for its most popular item: The Original Fish Taco. However, it’s the company’s dedication to providing fresh ingredients (sourced locally whenever possible), sustainable seafood, inventive chef-crafted recipes (designed by the Rubio’s culinary team) and a passion for creating lighter, fresher dishes that have made it a fan favorite for the past 30 years. This month they are spotlighting their most popular shrimp dishes including: the Grilled Shrimp Burrito, Gourmet Shrimp Taco and Salsa Verde Shrimp Taco. If you like seafood, you’ll love these!
The restaurant we visited had inside and outside dining and had a beachy decor that I loved. Thatched roofs over the tables and palm trees will invite me into a restaurant anywhere. We ordered chicken, steak, and carnitas for our first visit, something known and comforting, “Street Tacos” screamed my name. My husband and I each got the 3 taco plate that included chips and beans. After we got our food we headed straight for the Salsa bar that hosts 4 flavors of mild to spicy salsas, lemons and limes.
My husband appreciated the choice of flour vs. corn tortillas, yet we worried that the onion/cilantro in the tacos were going to overpower the meat. After adding salsa and some citrus, we were both pleasantly surprised how well blended the taco was with all the flavors. The meat was tender and flavorful and we were glad we had got one of each. A friend with us ordered the “Gourmet Chicken Taco” plate that included crisp bacon pieces, buttery Hass Avocado slices, red tomatillo salsa and creamy chipotle sauce, and cotija cheese. She enjoyed it and with just one taco, it was filling! Combined with the chips and beans, adding a drink, we had a satisfying delicious meal that tasted authentic to me! We will be back again, I have noticed the restaurant more in malls and shopping centers in the neighboring cities and I’d like to try the gourmet shrimp!
