“Nick & Nora” is showing at the Eureka Theater in San Francisco through April 19, 2015. The show is the first post Broadway production of “Nick & Nora,” reviving the musical that is based on the novel “The Thin Man.” I had the opportunity to have an evening out in San Francisco and attend the sold out opening night show at the Eureka Theater.
We arrived at the theater an hour or so early so we could get something to eat near by. Parking was great on the street right in front of the theater, and I would recommend arriving early for one of these parking spaces. We ate at Kokkari, located across the street from the theater. It was pricey, but well worth it! I suggest reservations, as the restaurant was sold out for the night, but we had a great time at the bar with excellent service. There are other options within walking distance, including a Starbucks and a Safeway if you want to take something into the theater.
The Eureka Theater is a quaint setting sitting a little over 200 people. It looks like it was once a movie theater. Everyone at the theater was very friendly and there was a well stocked bar to purchase snacks and drinks.
Set in 1937, “Nick & Nora” takes you to the Garden of Allah Hotel in Hollywood following a glitzy wedding of Nora’s old friends. Nick and Nora are approached by Nora’s friend, Tracy Gardner, to help her when the director of her next film, Max Bernheim, has been arrested for the murder of studio bookkeeper Lorraine Bixby. Nick is a retired detective, and when he refuses to take the case, Nora decides she can solve this mystery and help her friend Tracy out. Nick can’t stay out of it and gets drawn into a competition of who can unmask the murderer first.
The musical takes place over two acts. The first act is spent building the characters for the enjoyable second act where we find out what really played out that night and whodunnit. The small venue allows a close up of the stage and you feel apart of the production.
42nd Street Moon presents intimately produced performances of classic an rarely performed musical works.
With a short run on Broadway, “Nick & Nora” fits that bill. The show definitely had a B-movie feel to me. Tickets range from $25-$75, with shows running Wednesday-Sunday. It was mentioned that there are reduced ticket prices for children and students for the April 11th show, which I think is a great way to encourage introducing them to theater, but I do not feel the content of this show is suited for children.
