The team worked together to BBQ Walmart’s new USDA Choice steaks while giving us great grilling tips and tricks to head us into the summer grilling season starting off with Memorial Day weekend! Check out the webcast for yourself (30 minutes with a full demo/recipe/tips!)
Live Video app for Facebook by UstreamI had asked a question ahead of time, “how do you judge doneness of your meat without a meat thermometer” and got a fantastic tip on how to use your hand, you’ll have to watch the webcast above to hear about it!Using the tips from the webcast and purchasing a fabulous set of 4 thin-cut USDA Choice ribeyes from Walmart, my husband and I had a fantastic dinner over the weekend. Using McCormick’s Grill Mates Steak Rub just before putting the meat on the grill, we were careful not to pierce the meat (something we tend to do). Plus, using tongs and letting the steak rest before slicing it made all the difference. The meat was cooked medium well to well, our preference, but was full of flavor and juicy, it was really incredible and all for just about $4.50 per steak! My older two children loved the meat as well, we normally bbq tri-tips, but they loved the thin cut ribeye and the minimal fat on the meat. The rub was a touch spicy for my daughter, but my son embraced it and we’ll definitely be buying steaks at Walmart again for our family! I am eager to get my mouth on a filet!
Here are some super tips on grilling that perfect steak!

I have purchased meat and deli meat at Wal-Mart before. The boneless chicken breast had pieces of bone in it and their previous steaks were the worst I ever as far as taste and tenderness. The deli meat was terrible and I couldn’t even finish one sandwich and threw out the rest of the turkey and roast beef. I had it the first day I bought it and it tasted like it had been in my refrigerator for over a week. I gave it a second try at a different store and it was just as bad. Because of past experience, I don’t believe I will be giving these a try.

You should, we had the same experience as you and I stopped for years, but these premium steaks are the real deal, we have gone back for them 7 times now 🙂

DO NOT BUY THE ‘BETTER QUALITY MEAT’ AT WAL-MART!! I just finished working with them and in the back they open the containers and the meat sits in the sink open with things like cigarette butts and trash and 2 people who were working with the meat had cuts on their hands … DO NOT EAT IT!! I saw this first hand – otherwise I would not have known.

I just tried the new york strip and they were excellent steaks, cooked to true medium rare and were very juicy just as tasty as steaks steaks from a speciality grocer. These steaks are not enhanced as most of Walmart’s meats are. Now if they could stock domestic caught seafood they could have more of my food dollar.

I’m to scared too. To Eat meat from walmart 🙁

Annonymous u are a moron. I manage one of the stores in my state. All beef comes in pre packaged. No meat cutting or raw handling. No meat sits in sinks with cigarette butts. Seriously man get a grip if you dont like the food just say so but dont make bogus claims.
With that said their premium choice ribeyes are the best store bought ribeye ive had. Have stopped eating steaks at steakhouses. If you know how to marinade season and grill properly you will love the meat. Dont bother with the white packaging, go with the premium.
Yunia says
I agree with you 100% Mike!! We buy the same cut and stopped going to steakhouses too. We made dinner for friends and family without telling them where we got the steaks, and they were shocked when we told them they were from Wal-Mart. They said it was the best steak they’ve ever had including the pricy steakhouses 🙂

Mine were tuff. And yes I know how to cook steaks

I Picked out 2 very well marbled Choice ribeyes at Walmart. When I BBQ’d them they had a horrible taste that didn’t even remotely taste like beef, they were dry and tough. They turned my stomach. I’ve bought ribeyes at Safeway and various other stores and have never tasted anything like it. What are they fed on or injected with? There was a beef cattle feeding program about 14 or 15 years ago that mixed chicken manure and sawdust because of the high protein content. Is that still practiced? Or have they come up with some other waste product to lower costs and increase revenues without taking the consumers health or palate into consideration.

My wife bought a package of there Delmonico steaks and I was looking forward to cooking them on the grill. While grilling they smelled wonderful and that’s where the Taiste stopped. Horrible, bland, tough, I even added steak sauce to try and liven them up. After I choked the steak down because I’m not waiting it I made my way to the bathroom because I needed to evacuate my bowels. Needles to say Walmart has failed miserably in my book.

Are you sure you bought the new Choice steaks? Our filets were absolutely delicious!

Had never bought meat at Walmart, because we are very fussy about our meat, steaks especially. Decided to try their filets because of their new steak commercial. They were the best filets we have ever purchased. We were shocked!!! There was absolutely no waste, fat or grizzle. They only place we’ve had a steak this good is at a high end restaurant. Will definitely buy again!!!
