Did you know that Ka Lae (South Point) on the Big Island of Hawaii is the southernmost point in the USA? Nothing between here and Antartica but the deep blue sea!
The offshore currents and winds are notoriously powerful here and mariners from the first Polynesians to today’s locals have devised clever ways of plying the rich fishing grounds without being swept away. For instance, you’ll find rock loops carved through the lava here that tied off fishing canoes hundreds of years ago.
Not only can you dive into a hole in the in the rocks like this guy, but you can do it at the edge of the cliff as well. YIKES!
Holy smokes! We’re thankful to say we saw this guy dive twice and come back unscathed twice.
We love Hawaii photography and hope you do too!
