It’s been nearly 17 years since we moved into our first (and current) home. When you think of it, packing can be one of the easier parts to moving, it’s the other things you really need to pay attention to.
If you are considering purchasing or moving into a new home this year, follow these tips, they may sound simple or petty, but they can protect you and your family from identity theft and hours/days/months of heartache!
1. Replace the locks on your new home ASAP. Previous tenants could potentially still have a set of keys! Our home was sold due to a short sale with previous tenants having to be removed from the property by police because of domestic disputes. This made us really nervous so this is one of the very first things we did!
2. Check the Better Business Bureau for reviews of movers before allowing them in your home.
3. The safest way to pay your bills is to drop them off at a post office box. This way it is harder for identity thieves to intercept your bills and steal your information from your old or new mailbox.
4. Store papers containing personal information in a safe while moving. Keep safe rather than sorry!
5. Monitor your financial accounts more carefully than usual, you’re making a lot of purchases for your new home so it’s important you don’t miss something even minor.
