I’ve been a Marvel Movie fan for quite some time now — who isn’t since Iron Man and the Avengers leapt off the screen, right? I admit I was a little bit skeptical when Captain America: The Winter Soldier was coming out because I hadn’t fallen crazy in love with the first movie. But I was willing to bet that it would be a step up (just like Thor 2), and I am happy to say that I won that bet!
My fiancée and I attended a preview of the new “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” earlier this week, and we were completely knocked out by it! From the very beginning moments of laughter at seeing Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) run laps around another runner, to the very end where we knew we could hardly wait for the next Avenger movie (whatever it may be), we were utterly wrapped up in the movie. Marvel did this story proud, making us fall head over heels for our beloved Captain America, who makes you proud to be an American right down to your core.
Something I appreciated throughout the movie were the humorous moments that were slipped into each scene. Whether he’s joking around with Natasha (the beautiful and incredibly athletic Scarlett Johansson) or reminding us in some small way that he’s 95 and from another era (“No polio is good and the internet is helpful.”), we’re laughing in between catching our breaths as he jumps and flies from place to place, as though it was nothing to bounce off of walls and jump off of four story buildings. The graphics are amazing from beginning to end, making everything feel realistic and big. And it’s the human moments in between that keep it light and make you feel connected to these incredible characters.
The casting in Captain America is phenomenal. Chris Evan nails our All American boy hero who has the moral compass of a saint and makes a mother wish he could date her daughter. He does it so easily, and after seeing him on a talk show the other night with his mother and brother, you can see that he truly is a family man who is proud of where he comes from. It shows. Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow) is never an unwelcome sight, with her gorgeous looks and hilarious commentary on Steve’s romantic life — just add in all the physical fighting and badass moves and you’ve got yourself a perfect character and sidekick. And lets not forget Samuel Jackson as our beloved leader, Nick Fury. This movie was all about the three of them and their crusade to make the world a better and safer place. Add in Cobie Smulders, Robert Redford and Emily VanKamp and you’ve got yourself a cast that brings every character and storyline to life in a powerful way.
I don’t want to get into the storyline too much because I respect Marvel and the idea that people need to see it unfold for themselves. I’ll just say that you’ll get caught up quickly in what’s happening, and you’ll be rooting for the good guys from the beginning, though you won’t always know who they are right away. Get out there and see Captain America: The Winter Soldier while it’s in theaters and IMAX — seeing it on the big screen is a must!
