With my two older children being teens (14 and 16), my technology dates back to Nintendo DS, XL, and 3DS. Only recently did Santa bring my youngest daughter (9) an original Wii console after some relentless begging. More often than not there’s an accumulation of dust on the remotes and only one of the dozen games we have has had a lot of play. There are days when the older kids get in there and bowl, play baseball or dance with my daughter on the Wii, but we haven’t had the desire (or the kids haven’t raised enough money) to upgrade. Until now.
On my recent press trip, we learned about what’s next for the Disney Infinity family, the 3.0 Edition! No, I haven’t been living under a rock for versions 1 and 2, it’s just that we’ve bypassed that stage with sport, scouts, and other activities. There’s a lot I didn’t know and I did have to research more about it because I wasn’t as familiar, it’s actually pretty amazing technology and gaming.
So what do we know?
- Coming this September, Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition will welcome Star Wars™ to the collection of Marvel, Disney and Disney•Pixar characters, stories and worlds with three play sets:
- Twilight of the Republic is an all-new, original chapter of the Star Wars™ Saga, set in the Episodes I-III timeline. Use the Force™ and Lightsabers™ in epic battles as Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Darth Maul.
- Rise Against the Empire features galaxy-spanning missions with Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Darth Vader. This Play Set is set in the timeline of the original trilogy and will send you piloting X-Wing Fighters and the Millennium Falcon to planets like Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor.
- In time for Christmas the third Star Wars™ Play Set will be based on Star Wars™: The Force Awakens™.
- For you TRON lovers, Sam Flynn and Quorra will be available as physical characters for 3.o and boy do they look cool!
- Multiplayer Toy Box Expansion Games will allow play with all of your Disney, Disney•Pixar, MARVEL, and Star Wars™ characters from Disney Infinity 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 together! The compatibility will have parents breathing a sigh of relief that their Disney Infinity investment can carry over! Toy Box Expansion Games Toy Box Takeover (action-adventure) and Toy Box Speedway (kart racing) will bring all-new, structured multiplayer gameplay to Toy Box 3.0.
- Customers wanted more Marvel and more Disney characters, and you’re going to get them. Fan-favorite characters Mickey, Minnie, Mulan, and Olaf will also be joining Toy Box 3.0. There will also be a hot Play Set based on Disney•Pixar’s Inside Out featuring all five Emotions Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust as playable characters.
This is what has me intrigued. So what seems to be a ‘sequel’ to the movie, the Inside Out playset storyline sees Riley falling asleep after watching a scary movie and her imagination goes out of control. The plan of attack for her emotions is work together to fight broccoli back into the subconscious, tame the swamp monsters on the loose, and return all the memories to headquarters before she wakes up!
Each character has their own unique ability and the ultimate goal is to complete all 25 levels using the strengths of each emotion, this can be played as single-player or co-op. I saw this in action and the colorful world is stunning.
There will be a MARVEL Play Set (to be announced later!), along with more MARVEL characters including Hulkbuster Iron Man and Ultron.
- Finally, what we know and love as parents, the Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Starter Pack will now sell for a lower suggested retail price of $64.99. In addition to that, 3.0 Power Discs will come in labeled packs instead of blind packs.
As I mentioned above, I’m intrigued. I was lucky enough to come home from my trip with an Inside Out play set including Joy and Anger and this is easily #7 on my Must-Have Inside Out Products. After watching the movie with the whole family (teens included!), I’ve been hearing the pleas of “can we get an Xbox One?” “You know we’ll need one to play the Disney Infinity 3.0.!” I think some extra summer chores are in order!
