Ever since I returned from my LA trip, my nine-year-old has been begging me for spoilers for Teen Beach 2!
Do Brady and Mack see Lela and Tanner again?
What does Mack lose in the ocean?
What’s Brady’s big secret?
What’s your favorite song?
Are YOU in the movie?
I think in the last 2 weeks I’ve repeated, “you’re going to have to wait for the movie” about a million times, and no after my choreography lesson with Seacat and CheeChee they didn’t slip my moves into a bonus feature! The more promotion of the movie on Disney Channel, the more questions. The more games and quizzes she took on the Disney Channel app, the more she’d try to get out of me! So when the day came last Friday, I couldn’t wait for all her questions to be answered!
The hottest surf sequel under the sun debuted on the Disney Channel in prime time last weekend and is now available on DVD! Dive in and rock out to what I personally think is a sequel better than the original! It may have to do with the fact that meeting two main characters and dancing with the stars, I may be biased. But once you watch for yourself, I think you and your family will feel the same way!
Mack and Brady have only known eachother through the summer and now that school’s starting up again, they’re trying not to head for a wipeout! We learn that Mack is focused, is head of the Oceanography club, smart, college-bound and after the first day of school Brady is polar opposite. Here my 9 year old states she’s going to study dance at San Jose State University (something my oldest is pondering going into her senior year in high school)! I love right away how this movie has girl power on her brain! Then we see Brady as laid back, surfboard diagrams on the brain, and unsure what he wants for dinner. Brady and Mack’s relationship seems to be hitting some rough waves, but little does Mack know that Brady’s love for surfboards is more than surface level, he’s actually inventing new ones!
As the movie goes on, I realize my daughter knows ALL the songs in the movie thanks to Disney Channel! The music and dance numbers are really fun, and can be enjoyed by kids and parents alike. We’re both singing along smiling at eachother and surprised that we both know the words, it’s a fun bonding moment. We find that we both love Brady’s “On My Own” and I totally though of Green Day in the song which perked my husband’s ears up too!
When Lela and Tanner show up on the beach, Brady and Mack are in shock! Mack influenced Lela so much over the summer she is different and wants to experience life outside of “Wet Side Story.” This continues great messages of female empowerment in the movie. As Lela visits the modern world she quickly realizes she loves everything about it, especially being able to be in control of her own choices instead of being bound by the movie-world. Tanner is his smiley, teeth gleaming, silly self and follows Lela into the modern world.
Playing off as Mack and Brady’s cousins, Tanner and Lela try to fit in at school. Lela finds a love for Calculus as she visits class with Mack, this makes my 16-year old smile as she is ready to take the second level of the tough math class in high school this fall. Tanner meets up with Brady’s friend and they chat hair and are instant friends, he strut down the hall is hilarious, you’ll be cracking up!
Because of the time/space continuum, things start getting weird. Characters from “Wet Side Story” start disappearing and something has to be done. All the while Mack and Brady seem to be drifting apart and the two people that are coming to their rescue is Lela and Tanner! The girls are driven and supportive of one another, there’s no competition, bullying, or envy which is something we’re happy that young viewers will get to see. When Tanner learns about Brady’s secret, he really steps up and helps Brady push beyond his comfort zone and share his surfboard making passion with Mack.
All the characters in “Wet Side Story” risk fixing everything going on in their movie world to help Mack and Brady get their relationship back on track. Lela wants nothing more than to stay in the modern world, but she eventually realizes she needs to return to “Wet Side Story.” As the story unfolds, she creates her own destiny and becomes the strong, independent woman she’s aspired to be and a lot of support and friendship from Mack!
Just because Mack is heading to college, doesn’t mean she “won’t get” Brady’s passion and when she finds out she’s more happy with him than ever! Though I won’t give away the ending (it’s really great!!) if you haven’t seen it yet, Teen Beach 2 is a great movie night pick because of its multigenerational appeal, lighthearted humor, and great story that the entire family can enjoy together! We’ve recorded it on our DVR and we are receiving the DVD as well and I can’t wait to watch it again! Plus you’re going to love the DVD’s bonus features (this is my 16-year-old’s favorite part to look forward to as a dancer herself)! I especially enjoyed hearing Mollee Gray’s experience as our family watched her perform on So You Think You Can Dance!
