When you’re a tween going through a lot of changes physically, emotionally, and socially, having a lot of hardware on your face is tough. By, hardware I mean braces and glasses.
When my daughter turned 10 and found out she needed glasses, a part of her world collapsed. Not to mention my daughter has been wearing braces since age 7. “Why, I can see fine!” “Can I get contacts?!” were a few of the constant things she’d say, along with “it’s not fair!”
4 of the 5 of us in our household wear corrective lenses and well, the kids have come by vision difficulty honestly. But, being an almost 12-year-old, seventh grader, appearance is everything. When I had originally spoke with our optometrist about contacts for kids, he suggested we wait until about age 12 or 13, since contacts are a huge responsibility.
When Bausch and Lomb SofLensand Mom Central approached me with an opportunity to review the SofLens Daily Disposable lenses for my daughter, I about screamed with excitement. A few times in P.E. at school she’s had her glasses knocked off in ball games (bending them and making for an achey face), and there’s always the fear of the glasses falling off and breaking. Needless to say, we were at the optometrist getting adjustments often. As a competitive dancer, some of her moves are also something she worries about, she doesn’t want to knock off the frames and isn’t keen on wearing a strap to hold them on!
When we went for the fitting, I got a few photos of the trial and error of getting the lenses in and out before I was scooted out of the room so she could concentrate. Honestly, dailies are the best plan for a young person, having worn contacts myself the more often you can dispose of them the less worry of infections, tears, or other eye issues.
The SofLens contact offer:
- Slow-release moisture formula works with your natural tears to keep your child’s lenses feeling great all day long.
- High Definition Optics provide exceptionally crisp, clear vision and helps reduce halos and glare in low light conditions.
- If a lens is lost or torn – no worries! Replacing the lens is as simple as opening up the next one.
Coming home and practicing has been going really well, I think it’s pure determination to want to succeed and be able to wear them! Mornings have gone from about 20 minutes to 5-10 getting the contacts in, rewetting them, and trying again. Taking them out is easy, especially when you don’t have to store them in cleaning solution, just toss! Only one time did I physically have to put one contact in my daughter’s eye and only once did she struggle with getting one out, was left with a red eye and a few tears. At first I would hear, “I feel like something is in my eye!” and I would have to laugh and say, “there is!” She tells us that her vision is clear and it’s such a freeing feeling. Coincidentally, her braces came off a week after she got contacts so she is all smiles and her confidence level has quadrupled!
As an occasional contact lens wearer, I’m happy to see the benefits and success my daughter has experienced and I may switch brands at my next eye appointment as well!
