The Captain America shield is a pretty cool prop don’t you think? Here it is held by the ADORABLE actor Chris Evans who portrays the superhero in the movie as in The Avengers.
It’s patriotic, it’s tough, it’s iconic! Here he is again wearing it on his back.
Man I love those boots he’s rockin’!
Oh and again right here…love that red, silver, and blue, I like how it shines!
I held it!
I posed with it actually outside of the Marvel Studios set where the movie was being shot.
Here I am, in all my super hero glory! What do you think? I honestly had NO idea that I’d be holding that shield on that day, so the pants and the super hero boots were merely a PERFECT styling coincidence.
I’m usually not vain, but I really can’t stop looking at this photo of myself that is now my profile picture on Facebook.
Our group had the opportunity for a quick chat with property master Russell Bobbitt, the brains and designer behind the shield!
RUSSELL: So for this, obviously this is “Captain America 2” so I’m the first one to establish the look of this thing. In our movie we have four different looks because he goes into different scenarios, different missions. And he applies different material — Marvel materials that help make the shield stealth in different situations. And so we have four different styles. In theory in the Marvel lore, there’s one shield.
And so in this movie we — we have a couple surprises with the shield. And it’ll appear that there are different shields. But it’s only one shield. And that one shield, I have to make 50 of them to accommodate all the different [materials]– I have hard rubber, soft rubber, fiberglass, metal depending on if there’s an insert on it. I use a metal one ‘cause it looks the best. This one that you’re gonna hold and play with it’s the hard rubber one. It’s the next to the best. And I’m gonna give you this one because it’s lighter than the heavy, heavy metal one.
RUSSELL: We need so many because we do different sort of s[tuff], you know, if he’s walking around and it’s on his back, I can put a really clean nice heavy one on him. And when we photograph them from behind, it looks shiny and new like metal. Uh, when he takes it off and starts fighting with it, obviously we can’t hit each other with metal shields or the boys won’t be able to play very long. So I make soft ones to accommodate the [scenes].
Being on the set of a film is amazing. At times it’s bustling with activity, at times it’s quiet and still. Actors walk around, they chat with other cast members, they eat, they laugh and tell jokes, sure they’re just normal people like us. But, when you’re on the set of a action film with Marvel superheroes, the energy is just that much more cool. I wish I could explain the excitement and thrill I felt there amongst the cast of Captain America! I showed the photo to my family and they were in awe. My nephew who is a HUGE fan asked if I could hide him in my suitcase on the next Marvel trip! In my family, I’m kinda a big deal right now! Such great memories of a wildly cool experience!
If it’s possible, this story gets EVEN BETTER, but I can’t tell you about that until March…

Wow! This is pretty cool. I once had to transport Russell Crowe’s shield from GLADIATOR in my little VW bug and I thought I was BAD ARSE! This is rad. Great pic.
